Born and raised in Bohemia, Richard Teschner studied first at the Prague Art Academy and later at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. After moving to Vienna, he joined the Wiener Werkstätte. From 1910 onwards, like Gustav Klimt, he belonged to a group of artists and creative people who were regular guests at the imperial-royal court carpenter Friedrich Paulick spent their summer vacation in his villa on Lake Attersee. There he met the host's daughter, Emma Paulick, whom he married in 1911. This advantageous marriage gave him financial independence. Inspired by the Javanese stick puppet theater, he subsequently turned to puppetry in addition to painting and graphics and designed his own stick puppets and proscenium stages. His paintings and graphics are influenced, among other things, by elements from Asian culture as well as fairy tales and legends.
