Othmar Eder studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1977 to 1982. Study trips in the early 1980s took him to Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Mexico and Guatemala. The artist moved to Switzerland in 1982. He lives and works in Stettfurt in Thurgau. Between 1988 and 1999, he spent several months at the Karthause Ittingen. In 1990, Eder became a member of the Tyrolean Artists' Association. Since 1991, Eder has regularly participated in group exhibitions in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. In 1998 he took part in "Direct", a show of contemporary Tyrolean art in Madrid. Eder's first solo exhibition took place in 1991 at the Museum of the City of Lienz in Bruck Castle; since then he has exhibited extensively in Switzerland and Austria. In the course of his artistic career, Othmar Eder has won numerous prizes, awards and scholarships, including a Rome scholarship from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education and the Arts in 1989, a Paris scholarship from the Canton of Zurich in 1993, a work grant from the Canton of Zurich and a Chios scholarship from the Province of Tyrol in 1995, the Förderpries from the Province of Tyrol in 1996, the Montafon Prize from the Kunstforum in 1999, a stay in Rome at the Paliando artists' residence from the Province of Tyrol in 2000 and the German-Swiss Art Prize for 500 years of the Canton of Schaffhausen in 2001.
