Friedrich Jaeger was born into a Viennese Jewish merachant family und, as a twenty-two.year-ol,d was drafted to serve at the Italian front. After the war, Jaeger got married, converted to Catholicism and began studying at the Academy of Fine Art. During the twenties and thirties, he worked as an art teacher and, simultaneously, was able to apply himself to his own painting. During that time he created a diversified oeuvre comprising above all portraits, graphis art, postcards and book illustrations. In his day, Jaeger's artworks could be seen at Wiener Künstlerhaus and at the Secession. In 1938, he had to emigrate to New York. Working as an illustration of postcards and gift, he was able to start a new life theressor, he instructed young artists in Hallmark's own workshop.
