Alfred Bareis worked primarily as a landscape and veduta painter and created a series of depictions with Viennese motifs. He lived with Maria am Gestade and had a studio there. Bareis' oeuvre is not very extensive. He painted primarily for a smaller circle of collectors, whose members he invited to his studio. From 1924 he was a member of the Vienna Art Community and exhibited at its anniversary exhibition in 1929. During the war, he moved to Kremsmünster Abbey. After the war, he photographed and painted the American occupying soldiers there in exchange for natural resources.
