From 1902 to 1905, Kuhfuss trained at the Municipal Advertising School and the Royal Art School in Berlin with Philipp Franck. He then studied until 1907 in the landscape painting class at the Royal Academic Art School for Fine Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg. After completing his education, Kuhfuss worked as an art teacher and in 1911 joined the association of visual artists. Study trips to the North and Baltic Seas followed. In 1914 he became a member of the German Association of Artists and the Association of Berlin Artists. Between 1915 and 1918 he served as a medic in military service. After he was denounced to the Gestapo in 1935 for resisting Nazi propaganda and defending Jewish colleagues, he was no longer able to take part in exhibitions. In 1945 his house was confiscated and he had to vacate his studio apartment. After the end of the war until 1960 he worked as a lecturer in art education at the adult education center in Berlin-Pankow. In 1949 he headed a class for nudes, stage design and costume design at the textile and fashion school in Berlin. Kuhfuss became seriously ill in 1959 and was only able to paint in pain. In 1960 he was a prizewinner at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition.
