The painter Karl Josef Gunsam created predominantly architectural landscapes in strong colors, as well as flowers and portraits, initially inspired by J. Dobrowsky. Gunsam initially did an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. From 1922 to 1924, he was a professional footballer in Paris, where he also studied painting at the Académy Vitti. After his return to Vienna, he took up private studies with J. Dobrowsky. In 1931, Gunsam was represented in the Hagenbund for the first time; from 1933 to 1938, he was a member and partly on the board. After military service in the Second World War and imprisonment in Italy, Gunsam was a member of the Vienna Secession from 1945 to 1952, after which he transferred to the Vienna Künstlerhaus. From 1956 to 1965 he was a lecturer and assistant at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under J. Dobrowsky. Study trips took him to France, Italy and Greece. His works include: represented in the Belvedere, the Albertina, the Vienna Museum, the Lower Austrian Landsmuseum, and the Galerry Pittsburgh in the USA. On behalf of the City of Vienna, Gunsam created mosaics on municipal buildings, e.g. Wien 12, Steinbauergasse, Längenfeldgasse and Böcklgasse; Vienna 16, Breitenseer Straße 68-74. Honours, prizes (selection): 1937 Austrian State Prize; 1952 Awarded the title of professor; 1958 Honorary Award from the City of Vienna; Honorary grave at the Vienna Central Cemetery; Naming of an alley in Vienna-Simmering.
