Gottfried Graf studied at the Königlich württembergische Akademie und Kunstgewerbeschule in Stuttgart (Germany). After his study he travelled to Italy and France, where he became friends with the French cubistic painter Albert Gleizes. In 1913 Graf started to include cubistic forms in his work and developed his own and distinctive style. He was part of the Üechtgruppe and the Gruppe 1929. In 1920 he became professor of the Academy in Stuttgart and influenced decisively the following generation of painters in this part of Germany.
