Willy Eisenschitz (Vienna 1889 - 1974 Paris)

Works

Willy Eisenschitz was an Austrian Emigrant artist, who lived most of his life in France. Sucessfull throughout his time in France, he also achieved broad international sucess in his last 20 years. His works can mostly be found in international museums and collections in the US, UK, France, Austria, and Germany. Having belonged to "Austria´s lost generation of artists" he was rediscovered by museums, art dealers and a broad public in Austria for the last 20 years. Books in French, English and German have been published since then and important museum exhibtions in Linz/Austria and Toulon/France have been made.

Eisenschitz was born into a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna. He enrolled in the Art Academy of Vienna, but left in 1912 to study art in Paris. In 1914 he married his French colleague Claire Bertrand, with whom he had two children. In 1921 he discovered the light and beauty of Provence. In Paris he was well integrated into the French art and gallery scene, and belonged to the group of painters "Ecole de Paris" in the 20s and 30s. Despite being persecuted and having to hide during World War II, he was able to pursue a successful life as an artist after the war. From 1951 onwards he spent many summers in Ibiza while living most of the year in Toulon. Having been a French citizen for many years, Eisenschitz died in Paris in1974, he had not been recognised in Austria until his death.

In 1999 he was honoured for the first time with a one-man-show at the Art Museum of Linz, Austria, which was soon followed by a retrospective by the Museum of Toulon. Eisenschitz is  now well known in Austria and there are many publications about his work.

As an art gallery we have specialized in works by Willy Eisenschitz for more than 20 years and are pleased to offer you a large selection of fine oil paintings and paperworks by this artist.
