Andersen was trained as an artist by his father. Later he studied at the painting schools Scheffer and Bauer (Strehblow) in Vienna. After that, he travelled to Italy with Anton Faistauer and Gustav Schütt. Being a member of the "Neukunstgruppe" he exhibited his artwork in 1911 at the Hagenbund, together with Faistauer, Kolig, Wiegele, Schiele and Kokoschka. After 1918 he became a member of the "Sonderbund", where the Kunstschau painters had united. He was also a member of Salzburg association "Wassermann".
In 1920 he presented a great "Sonderbund" exhibition at Kunstverein Winterthur, at Kunsthalle Bern and in Geneva. In 1921 he co-founded the Wiener Gobelinmanufaktur and created the first modern-day Austrian tapestry. From 1922 he was a member of the Hagenbund and the Secession. He participated in many Kunstschau exhibitions. From 1945 to 1965 he worked as a professor at the Viennese Academy, from 1946 to 1948 he was its dean.
