Kurt Absolon studied from 1945 until 1949 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the class of Robin Christian Andersen. Additionally, he attended Herbert Boeck's life-drawing night class at the same institution. Initial oil paintings were carried out on affordable wrapping paper. Absolon's drawings were influenced mainly by literary themes and the illustrations thereof. In 1951 he created several sheets for the cycles "Pierrot", "Cain", "Job", "Don Quichote" and the "Jardin du mal", as well as landscape drawings inspired by repeated visits to the mountains of Tyrol. In 1952 he created the cycles "Aphorismen" and "Cœur volé". 1953 saw him working on the cycles "Shadows", "Interspaces", and "Ecce Homo". In early 1953 Kurt Moldovan, who knew the scene of Paris inside out, advised Absolom to apply for studying in France. In 1954 Absolon won the first prize of the 5th Austrian Graphic Art Award (Österreichischer Graphikwettbewerb) in Innsbruck for his cycles "The Old Man and the Sea" and "Sodom and Gomorrha". In 1955 he received the Theodor Körner Award, and the culture department of the Viennese city council (Kulturamt der Stadt Wien) bought several of his works. In 1955/6 he studied once more, for one term, at the Viennese Academy, this time in Gütersloh's murals class. In 1956 he accomplished some graphic pieces, now considered very rare. Part of this phase were also many drawings he did of his pregnant or breastfeeding wife. In the same year, the artist travelled to Paris and Arles on a scholarship. There, he drew cityscapes and depictions of bullfights. On April 26, 1958, Kurt Absalom died in a car-crash in the passenger seat.
